Club History

Seán Treacy’s Hurling Club was founded in 1973 to provide hurling to the community of the greater Lurgan and Craigavon areas. Starting with a senior men’s hurling team, the club has grown significantly over the last 50+ years and now fields teams from under 6 up to senior. Recently a nursery program has been successfully introduced. Every year our membership and player numbers continue to grow and we now have great teams in all age groups.

Since our inception, Seán Treacy’s has never had a home. When the club started in the 1970s, it was based in Davitt Park and later moved to Taghnevan. In the mid-eighties, Seán Treacy’s developed a close affiliation with Clann Éireann GAC and both clubs still continue to work closely. For many years, some club training and matches were played on the ‘hurling pitch’ on the North Circular Road. Due to the growth of the club, Seán Treacy’s needed to book pitches wherever possible so that training could continue. In 2016, Seán Treacy’s started to hire the pitch at Tannaghmore Gardens from the council. After years of lobbying and hard work, catch nets and goalposts were erected at Tannaghmore Gardens and the area was transformed into a pitch fit for hurling matches, not just training. For the first time, Seán Treacy’s had a ground where all teams and age groups could train and be together, as a club should be.

One of the main aims of the club is to develop our young players, supporting them through all age groups up to senior, securing the future of hurling in North Armagh. During the early years, the focus was on developing skills and in time the club reaped the benefits. The club is extremely proud of the successes of all our teams and is committed to their progress. Over the years our senior team has won the Armagh league and junior hurling championship many times, their most recent success being in 2022.

We are currently amalgamated with our neighbouring hurling club St Malachys, Portadown, for our teenage players. The amalgamated teams are known as North Armagh Hurling and gained success at under 15 winning the Féile shield in 2022. We are very proud to have representation from the club on the Co. Armagh senior and underage hurling teams. In 2025, three of our u20 players became All Ireland champions with Armagh!

In recent years, we have also been working hard at developing the aspects of the club outside of hurling.

In 2021, Seán Treacy’s joined the GAA Healthy Club Project which saw the introduction of a number of club initiatives. In 2023, our efforts were rewarded and Seán Treacy’s was awarded a GAA Healthy Club Silver award.

In 2021, GAA Rounders was introduced, with Seán Treacy’s becoming the first club in Co. Armagh to introduce the code. Although the emphasis has been on fun, one of the players represented the club on the Ulster GAA Rounders Provincial Tournament in 2022.

In 2023, Seán Treacy’s launched its baby and toddler group. This group was set up in response to an identified need in the community as there was no affordable local baby program. The baby group provides parents and carers with the opportunity to connect with others in the community and share their experiences of their new baby. Grant funding allows us to engage external facilitators to provide programs such as baby massage and multisensory music and movement sessions.

Tá Gaeilge agus Cultúr san club ag fás freisin. Every year, the club is actively involved in Seachtain na Gaeilge and host an annual Tráth na gCeist agus Oíche Ceol. Seán Treacy’s are proud to have a group of young players who are talented both on and off the pitch; their traditional group has won the hat-trick at the Portadown music festival, taking first place for three years in a row! In 2023, a member made club history when she reached the Ulster Scór final in solo singing. This year the club also entered a team in the Scór Sinsear Tráth na gCeist.
